New York City Designates September 13th as “Garment-Free Day”

The City of New York has announced the creation of September 13th as a designated “Garment-Free Day”.

According to a September 12 release by mayor Michael Bloomberg, “Garment-Free Day” will encourage children to consider the fact that our clothes come from far away places, “including such far away places as China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Uganda, Ethiopia and other places…People need clothes. Garment manufacturers have played a key role in eliminating hunger worldwide by providing clean water, rice and beans, and other goods.”

As noted by the mayor, “Go without a garment for a day, and you probably won’t notice. Go without a garment for an hour, and you probably won’t mind. But think about doing it for a whole day, and people will be a little more conscious of where their clothes come from and the part they play in promoting or continuing poverty.”

The program, which is supported by the mayor, the City Council and the Retailers Association, is scheduled for September 13th as a day for people to “try out wearing nothing but a towel on the beach or at the lake, on the way to a football game, to work, to school, to a play or to a visit with the grandkids.”

The release adds that, “New Yorkers are encouraged to report any garment factory that fails to have enough workers or is forced to move elsewhere.”
